What this book is

A reading of convergent design

This is not a manual for building models, and it is not a claim that engineers sat down to copy a hippocampus. It is a reading of convergent design: when a system faces limited memory, limited time, hostile input, or the need to act on the world, it tends to arrive at similar tools — whether that system evolved or was built last year.

Each chapter starts with a part of you that is already working. Then it names the AI term. Then it says where the rhyme stops. That second half is the point.

Who it is for

And what you can do after you read it

written for the person who has to sit in the meeting: infrastructure, delivery, operations, a first-time buyer of an “AI platform,” anyone tired of fluency being sold as understanding.

  • Hear the word

LLM, RAG, agent, guardrail, hallucination, said in the language of a body you already live in.

  • See where it breaks

every chapter spends time on the collapse: frozen weights, no felt consequence, a lock that does not heal.

  • Ask one better question

each chapter ends with “What this changes in a meeting”: one decision, one risk, one question.

  • Carry the Field Guide

eight clusters of the words people actually say, so you can explain them without opening a vendor slide.

I am grateful to Santosh Mokashi for reading this manuscript with care, and for the candor of that reading. The book is sharper for the distinction between convergent design and imitation, and for the reminder that a useful metaphor still has to help someone decide. Any remaining faults are mine.

Early readers

From a first reader

The Original Algorithm explains modern AI concepts — LLMs, RAG, guardrails, agents, caching, fine-tuning, and more — by mapping them onto parts of the body: the brain, the hippocampus, the immune system, the hands. Each chapter says where the analogy breaks down, and ends with a practical “what this changes in a meeting” note for leaders. The book argues that AI is our early attempt to copy a fraction of what the body already does, and it helps a reader say the key terms out loud. A very helpful introduction to AI.
